Our Best Answer - Do you prefer the ACT or SAT for freshman admission?

SAT and ACT Tests

All freshman applicants must submit scores from either the ACT Assessment plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test. UCSB does not have a preference between the SAT or ACT exams. For students taking the SAT Reasoning Test, UCSB's College Board code is 004835.

  • Take the ACT With Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test by December of your senior year or earlier. The critical reading, writing and mathematics scores on the SAT must be from the same sitting. Students taking the updated SAT (March 2016 or later) will be required to complete the optional essay. If you take the ACT, you will be asked to report your scores on each section of the test as well as your composite score.
  • UC no longer requires SAT subject tests. However, certain programs on some campuses recommend them and subject tests can be used to satisfy the "a-g" requirements. Specifically, the College of Creative Studies at UCSB recommends a SAT subject test related to an applicant’s chosen major. The College of Engineering recommends that all applicants take the Math 2 subject test.
